“You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again. You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life”

Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch is not something I would normally pick up to read myself considering I am more of a fantasy/dystopian type of reader, but nonetheless I did enjoy this read. Before picking it up I did my research and saw that this book was 11 years in the making I thought to myself, “If a writer was putting so many years into one story that it had to be amazing,” and I was not wrong.
The Goldfinch tells the story of a young boy by the name of Theo Decker who survives a terrorist attack in a New York City art gallery killing his mother. Upon escaping the destroyed and ruined building, he takes a small painting along with him. A single goldfinch sitting on top of a blue bird feeder. This petite and simplistic painting is worth more than Theo thinks and leads him into the criminal underworld taking him from New York to Sin City, back to New York and even Amsterdam.
The writing was exquisite throughout the book. One paragraph flowed to the next in such harmony and the descriptions created such vivid images. I did not mind the obscenely long paragraphs for they were so beautifully written. The story pulled me in with its storyline and its similarities to Harry Potter. It brought me back to the days when I was a child reading Harry Potter and the thoughts flowing through my mind. I enjoyed Tartt’s writing and look forward to picking up The Secret History and The Little Friend in the near future.

Thanks Hon!
